If you are an employer seeking to hire GP’s or Specialists who will need to work under the Australian Medicare system (i.e. will need a Provider Number from the Health Insurance Commission), then the following information will greatly assist you in filling your needs!  It is important that you understand (provided you are eligible) that under recent Australian Federal government initiatives, your organisation WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY any recruitment fees to Qantum for sourcing and placing GP’s or Specialists within your medical facility.

The Australian Department of Health and Ageing - ‘Strengthening Medicare’

You probably are aware that the Australian Department of Health and Ageing, as part of an intiative called 'Strengthening Medicare’, has developed an international recruitment strategy aimed at increasing the supply of appropriately qualified overseas trained doctors looking for jobs and wishing to work in Australia.

This initiative is designed to provide a national approach which will augment and supplement current medical recruitment activities being undertaken by State and Territory governments in Australia and private sector organisations.  In July 2005 Qantum was appointed as a preferred supplier to assist the Federal government in their efforts recruit more overseas trained doctors to work in vacant Medicare billing positions in districts of workforce shortage through:

  • development of international medical recruitment strategies
  • reducing red tape in approval processes
  • assisting employers and overseas trained doctors in arranging jobs
  • improving training arrangements and additional support programs; and
  • providing opportunities for doctors to stay in Australia or obtain permanent residency through changes to immigration arrangements

Large numbers of overseas trained doctors currently have medical jobs and are working in Australia and this number is expected to grow considerably in the next 5 years as a result of this international recruitment strategy. So where do you start?

DoctorConnect has been produced by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing

DoctorConnect has been produced by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing to provide a starting point for both overseas trained doctors who may be considering working in Australia and for employers seeking to recruit them.

While continuing to actively address the shortage of Australian trained doctors, the Australian Government is also attending to the immediate medical needs of those communities in areas of workforce shortage through other initiatives, including the recruitment of appropriately qualified overseas trained doctors.
